What is EMDR and how does it help you?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, relationship problems, career issues, addictions and other psychological stress - such as distressful or disturbing experiences in your present or past.
EMDR helps you learn new and different techniques to self-soothe and enhance your brain’s positive neural network. Neuroscience shows that our brain has neuroplasticity which means how our brain functions is changeable. Very simply said “You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.”
EMDR works in many ways to help update your learning and restore your healing with present information. It focuses on the brain’s ability to constantly learn and gain new insights, awareness and understanding.
You will gain a sense of freedom from current and/or past emotional blocks that may have kept you from living a full and emotionally healthy life.

In Spring of 2019 classes on Acute-Trauma Incident Processing (A-TIP) - the CPR of Psychological Trauma- will be offered. These classes and 1-day workshops are for medical and health care professionals, teachers and other educational personnel, and psychology professionals and bodywork therapists.
The techniques taught in this workshop will allow you to help others in an emergency or disaster to receive treatment for calming, soothing, and processing that may help them limit or avoid PTSD symptoms due to traumatic event.
+ How does EMDR work?
EMDR supports and allows the brain in the processing of disturbing emotional content with the use of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, or auditory or tactile stimulation. Much like the dream state which uses REM -rapid eye movement- to process you concerns or disturbing experiences, EMDR is a protocol to help with problem solving and promoting emotional healing. EMDR replicates this sleep pattern of processing while you are present and fully awake.”
+ What does “emotional content, disturbing experiences or memories” mean?
Disturbing events or experiences or memories are like “being stuck with something I don’t want/need anymore.” EMDR allows for processing these disturbing or distressful experiences and reaching a more updated resolution. Sometimes, as we work together and resolve a disturbing experience EMDR may even allow for other material to be released in our unconscious without a need to discuss or be aware of it consciously. In neuroscience the phrase goes “Neurons that fire together wire together.” So, it is possible for more healing to take place than we may have expected. This can contribute to an overall sense of improved mood, energy and how we relate to ourselves and others.
+ Why do people choose EMDR therapy?
EMDR allows for an integrative and highly balanced approach to work on most if not all concerns you may come to see a psychotherapist for.
We may use several methods of Psychotherapy depending on your needs, concerns and readiness. We may focus from a CBT perspective- learning how our thoughts affect our feelings. Some clients work best with DBT to focus on learning how to emotionally regulate and change the maladaptive responses that no longer work in their lives.
It is enlightening and exciting to do this work with people because you can truly heal and feel better. Either current and past concerns may be addressed depending on your needs. Creating a sense of emotional well-being and balance allows you to live your life fully. You will also learn tools and techniques for self-care and self-soothing.
+ Will I have to focus on forgiveness if my trauma was physical, sexual or emotional abuse? And if my abuse occurred in childhood or I am a victim of a crime or disaster does EMDR make me think what happened to me was ok?
No! EMDR therapy will never make abuse ok or acceptable. Children are never responsible for being abused - ever! Being in a disaster is never something you planned for or expected. However, the goal is healing so you can feel healthier and stronger. After EMDR therapy often the memory of what has happened to you, although the event was completely wrong, “will no longer define who you are!” EMDR helps you gain new insights and update you with present information, which opens the door to moving forward at your own pace in your own timing.
+ Is it necessary to tell my therapist all the details about my problems?
No, With EMDR you can choose to process without talking about all the specifics or details.
+ Is EMDR hypnosis?
No, you are fully awake and alert and in control during processing.
+ I only remember part of a distressful event – can EMDR still help?
Yes! You do not have to fully remember everything about the distressful experience or memory. If fact, you can share as much or as little as you choose about the experience, event or memory. Because what your brain needs and wants to remember to process about the experience of distress or disturbance is all that is necessary.
+ If I don’t have any “real trauma memories” or I haven’t been in a real trauma like combat or a disaster- how will EMDR help me?
Any unresolved or distressful experience/incident/event/memory may be affecting your sense of well-being. This contributes to symptoms of anxiety, depression, relationship problems, substance abuse and addiction, and other psychological stress. Our mind and body are this powerful connection so you may be experiencing emotional symptoms as well as physical distress. With EMDR and other self-soothing tools you may find a heightened sense of self-esteem and self-confidence as well as an improvement in your physical health.
+ Will it be difficult emotionally or will I get emotional during EMDR therapy?
The beauty and balance of EMDR is in learning several self-soothing bilateral stimulation (BLS) techniques to maintain and strengthen your emotional regulation. Will you be emotional? Perhaps yes…or somewhat...or perhaps not much at all. The EMDR method of Bilateral Stimulation (either by eye movements (REM), or tones (auditory) or tappers (tactile) has a calming effect during any processing. BLS allows for the self-soothing and/or desensitization processing to continue within a calming framework. You will be supported all through the processing and given many tools to enhance your healing.
